My kind of RPG by BelmonteOliveira My kind of RPG by BelmonteOliveira
My first pixel art here, on DA.

I'm a huge fan of RPGs, it is my favorite genre despite my love for fighting, adventures and stealth games.

I finished dozens and dozens of JRPGs...Final Fantasy I finished almost every game of the cannon games (I have to beat FFII to complete), Dragon Quest, Persona, Tales of, Valkyrie Profile, Front Mission, Metal Max...

But I love WRPGs too! Elder's Scroll, Planescape, Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, Fallout...Yesterday I beat Akalabeth to start to play the Ultima series from start to finish (I'm impressed with Ultima I).

Well...I'm writing all this because if I would do a RPG I would do like this deviation. A game that combines JRPGs and WRPGs, something like Chrono Trigger meets Fallout.

Some colors I picked are from the palette of awesome artists Orkimides, Opacus, Junkboy and Adarias.

Boa noite, gostei muito do estilo. Estava procurando um estilo de pixel art para me basear, estou idealizando um Beat'em up. Posso usar este estilo como base?

There is no such dichotomy of Western Roleplaying games and Japanese roleplaying games.

I really wish people would stop using those terms, I blame magazines like IGN.

There is many differences between WRPGs and JRPGs. I recommend you see this Extra Credits episode for a quick explanation: [link]

Thanks for the comment!

There's nothing there that I haven't heard before plus, there are some errors with their research plus a genre can't be defined by the reason you play a game as we would have too many genres to even keep track of.

The reason why I said there was no such dichotomy was that the RPG dichotomy does not work that way.

There is the first Division of Turned Based and Real Time, both the West AND Japan have made RPG in these categories.

Then we have subdivision including MUD, Tabletop, MMO, Action, Strategy/Wargame, Phase Turn, and probably more from obscure games.

Really the RPG genre is a really diverse genre and can't be classified by the simple dichotomy of: "Was it made in America or Japan?"

Plus, where do RPGs made in Korea and China fit into this dichotomy?

I understand very well english but I spend some time to create sentences, so it will be very time consuming to me if we start a discussion about RPG definitions. I hope you understand.

So I made a short version of what I think:

I respect your opinion, and I know that "WRPG" and "JRPG" are incomplete since we have many games with features of both genres. But these terms are more about the feel of the game than where they where created, like "english rock".

What do you mean by feel? I think of all games as an entertaining challenge for me to overcome, all games feel the same to me.

And if it is feeling, why not divide the categories by these so called "feelings"?

If all games feel the same there is not a reason genres have names. We should just call them "games".

Even put a first person perspective change the feel of the game.

Dude, just go see the extra credits episode. Feel of the game is a central topic on the episode.

I already saw it but I don't see how feeling contributes to defining a genre, everyone is going to have different feelings toward different games even within the same genre.

Mario and Sonic are both Platformers and people probably feel different about them.

The reason I play a game and the genre it is in have nothing to do with each other.

Also the comparison they gave doesn't really fit: A movie is a narrative, its genre is defined by its narrative elements, not how it is filmed.

A game however is a form of interactive media, its genre is defined by its interactive elements.

Haha, the image is hilarious! Poor Nameless one.

In this image JRPGs and WRPGs are like water and oil... I was thinking in something more subtle like on the deviation. :D
